Unformatted text preview: HIV/AIDS 16:30 Distribution of new US in 2006 by age group and by method of transmission 31% is 30-39 25% is 40-48 34% is 13-29 10% is greater than 50 Basically no children because proper precautions are taken 1 in 5 cases in the US is undiagnosed Children living with AIDS has grown significantly over time, in 2007 we had over 2 million There are about 15 million children orphaned by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa While the US has a lot of medication that is not always why we are better off, most of it is due to our strong education program for HIV and AIDS Why might the threat from the epidemic be as great in the future as it is now, even though a number of types of treatments are available? Like any other type of infectious disease, the body builds resistance to drugs People don’t have access to treatments Cultural aspects that can’t be stopped through education Are people really willing to give things up? We don’t necessarily prioritize health A lot of undiagnosed people Concern that younger people don’t feel a hyper threat from HIV/AIDS which paves the way for disease to spread faster Does HIV/AIDS slow the rate of population growth in countries with high prevalence rates? No because families are concerned that their children will not live long so they have more Intermediate Groups 16:30 Intermediate Groups: swing votes Not a strong personal conviction but are easily persuaded Proportion of people who have children who are not vaccinated are much larger Herd Immunity: Those who have not received the vaccination are practically immune because those around them have the vaccination and will prevent the spreading To achieve herd immunity: 85-90% must be vaccinated Individual immunity You would need to be immune to everything to survive Herd: those surrounding prevent the spread Babies are not immune Elderly: weaker immune systems Vaccines not lasting Boosters People who already had the disease If traveling to another country with different diseases Those who are sick Cancer: people who have bad immune systems People who are immune to the vaccinations People who choose not to get vaccinated Religious reasons (Amish) Intermediate Groups 16:30 Correlation possibly between disease and vaccination Unanticipated negative consequences Lazy Allergic reactions (negative health responses) Monetary reasons: HPV Shots Could possible increase the risk of sexual behavior Engage in riskier behavior Vaccinations don’t last Viruses evolve Potential negative reaction Exposed the virus itself can lead to being sick Possible exposure to more viruses when going to get vaccination...
