US History Notes Week 7 Europe and America on the Eve of Colonization - Just went through the crusades from 1095-1270. 7 crusades against Muslims, claimed territory for Christianity, but failed to create successful Christian settlements. Suffered from Black Death from 1340s to the early 1400s. Dramatic devastation; half of the population died. Naturally recover. Italy recovers first and launches the Renaissance and joins the Mediterranean trade networks. Spain and Portugal are cut off from Mediterranean -> have incentive; they’re looking to get connected in trade. Motivation to explore- support, labor force, technology & skills, motivation for Spain and Portugal, labor force-> rapid repopulation, $ funding traders, merchants, get out of Med. Portuguese lead the way for cartography Spain is united, wants to get away from Mediterranean, find China? America- isolated, only other conquest before 1000 AD- Norsemen?? never established permanent settlement G&M- 1450 CE Native Americans- 25 million-100 million people in Western
