ESR 321 HW #1 Date due: See syllabus Please complete the following problems (engineering paper is recommended, although not required). Two datasets are attached, one from a forest in the Pacific Northwest and one from a forest in the central Appalachian mountains. Each dataset comes from an aggrading forest that was cut during the past century. Each dataset was collected using approximately the same method. Assume sample areas are approximately the same size. 1. Construct a frequency histogram of the diameter distribution for each dataset. 2. Compute Simpson and Shannon diversity indices for both datasets. 3. Using a t-test, determine if there is a difference in diameter between the forests represented by the two datasets. 4. Using a t-test, determine answers to the following questions: a. is the average diameter of conifers different than the average diameter of deciduous trees in both datasets combined? b.
