Page 1 of 5 Adapted with permission by: Ms. Erica Heldorn 9/11 Terrorist Bombing Negative 9/11 Terrorist Bombings: Conspiracy Theory Overview “The terrorist bombings on September 11 were not orchestrated by the US government.” American’s fascination with conspiracy theories dates back as far as the beginning of the republic its self. Every major historical event in history has some sort of conspiracy theory; The JFK assassination, Elvis and Tupac still being alive, proof of extra terrestrial life, government knowledge of the Pearl Harbor attacks, the moon landing being staged, and more recently the theory that the US government had knowledge of or even planned the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I. National Geographic in their July 2011 article titled “9/11,” states that conspiracy theories accusations form a meta-narrative in which official sources cannot be trusted, and in which nothing ever seems to happen by chance. And while it’s tempting to dismiss conspiracy theorists as preposterous, it’s hard to deny the extent of their influence on American popular culture. II. No doubt about it people love a good story and this is what makes them so popular. But anyone can write anything and post it on the web, add a little research, and draw some conclusions from pictures and a conspiracy theory is born. III. One more point I would like to make is that these conspiracy theory regarding 9/11 did not start to gain large momentum until 2004 when the war in Iraq started to lose public support. People seemed to start questioning the motives behind the war. IV. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York said in his interview in USA Today in September 2011, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion; he is not entitled to his own facts."

I. One of the first theories surrounding the World Trade Center is the wide spread damage. a. The San Diego Independent Media Center Journal article “The World Trade Center” written by Smith in November of 2011 states that the first plane crashed through the 94th to the 98th floors of the World Trade Center's 110-story North Tower; the second jet slammed into the 78th to the 84th floors of the 110-story South Tower. The impact and ensuing fires disrupted elevator service in both buildings. Plus, the lobbies of both buildings were visibly damaged before the towers collapsed. Because of this the website states that there is no way that the impact of the jet caused such wide spread damage 80 stories below. The explanation they offer is that “other explosives” had already been detonated in the lower levels of tower at the same time the planes crashed. b. In May of 2002 the
