Chapter 1. Vocab 1. Sacred- A term derived from Latin for that which is done “inside the temple.” (Sacrifice) 2. Apologetics-One activity of offering a defense of one’s religion. 3. Outsiders Viewpoint- academic study religion. that seeks understanding from an objective, nonsectarian viewpoint. 4. Wankan Tanka- “Great Mysteriousness” (powerful and sacred beings) 5. Critical Tolerance- attitude that endorses freedom of religion but does not necessarily approve of every religious belief + practice. 6. Shaman- Name for a religious figure usually found in tribal societies who engages with the help of spirit guides in healing, diving and other functions important to the community through the means of ecstatic trances or visions. 7. First order activity- Engagement in some primary activity like practicing a religion or speaking a language. 8. Insiders Viewpoint- View of Religious participant who seeks understanding in order to increase faith.
