Chapter 4 Vocab 1. Phenomenological Theory- Particular Theory + comparative method that assumes religions to be manifestations of the sacred. 2. Hierophanic- Manifestation or revelation of the sacred. 3. Numinous- Latin word for spirit- refers to experiences of awe, mystery, dread, and fitness before a majestic overwhelming power that is wholly and hence beyond human reason to comprehend. 4. Eschatological Myth- Sacred Stories about the end of history or the destruction of the world. 5. Ritualistic- In the context of the functions of myths, this term refers to sacred narratives, that explain and justify ritual actions. 6. Latent Functions- Refers to the hidden and often unintended functions of a myth or ritual action. 7. Symbolic Theories- Theory of myth in particular religion in general that claims meaning is symbolic, hence hidden beneath the literal surface. 8. Functionalist Theories- Theory about myth in particular religion in general that claims their function or what they accomplish. 9.
