Notes © 2005-2011 : Evan Golub ([email protected]) Color Manipulation There are many types of color-altering editing styles and techniques. We can add color, we can remove color, we can alter and stylize color.

Notes © 2005-2011 : Evan Golub ([email protected]) Adding/removing color is not new… The general colorization concept and techniques probably go back over a hundred years, and include using color pencils and crayons on black and white prints. Some grayscale film from NASA’s Apollo missions had color added. The video for a-ha’s song “Take on Me” used frame-by- frame rotoscoping to convert video to comic book style drawings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914&ob=av3e

Notes © 2005-2011 : Evan Golub ([email protected]) …more recently… It has become possible to use computer-assisted and even semi-automated tools with good results. Two somewhat recent examples that tie a bit more closely to our topic today would be those of “Pleasantville” and “Sin City”.

Notes © 2005-2011 : Evan Golub ([email protected]) “Fake” Colorization If you have a color image, you can create a selectively- colored image with a little patience. – Load the original image into GIMP. – Go to Layer menu and select Duplicate Layer. – In the layers window, select the duplicated layer and then go to the Colors menu, and then select Desaturate . • Note: This is just one way to convert an image to grayscale. – Finally, erase (using either an eraser directly or by adding a layer mask and modifying that) the parts of the grayscale image that you want to appear in color (erasing will reveal the color image is below this layer).
