WHAT IS RESEARCH (I) A contrast: I HWs, Quizzes, Exams have well defined questions on them that the prof already knows the answer to. I Research may involve questions that NOBODY KNOWS the answer to (yet!). I Research may involve new questions that NOBODY HAS POSED before. WHAT IS RESEARCH (II) Examples 1. There are already algorithms to do problem X fast. Can you do better? Can you prove that you cannot do better? 2. You have an idea of how to make an AI system more human-like. Write code for proof-of-concept. Expand. WHY DO RESEARCH 1. Courses are GREAT but only tell you SOME of whats out there. 2. You get to learn material NOT in courses, of interest to YOU . 3. Get a GREAT letter from a professor- Grad School, Industry, 4. Many start ups started that way including Google. 5. Go to Conferences in exotic locations to present your research! FINDING A TOPIC 1.
