WHAT IS RESEARCH (I) A contrast: HWs, Quizzes, Exams have well defined questions on them that the prof already knows the answer to. Research may involve questions that NOBODY KNOWS the answer to (yet!). Research may involve new questions that NOBODY HAS POSED before.

WHAT IS RESEARCH (II) Examples 1. There are already algorithms to do problem X fast. Can you do better? Can you prove that you cannot do better? 2. You have an idea of how to make an AI system more human-like. Write code for proof-of-concept. Expand.

WHY DO RESEARCH 1. Courses are GREAT but only tell you SOME of what’s out there. 2. You get to learn material NOT in courses, of interest to YOU . 3. Get a GREAT letter from a professor- Grad School, Industry, 4. Many start ups started that way including Google. 5. Go to Conferences in exotic locations to present your research!
