FERGUSON (KLARMAN) 10/1/09 1871 : Klan Trials (succeeded in shutting down the Klan in SC, which had traditionally been one of the most violent states in the South—but this was only temporary; NC) 1872 : Most peaceful election of Reconstruction Georgia was the only exception to this rule, it became a very violent state very early on Republicans: 55% of the vote (largest between 1836-1892)—means that Republicans are shutting down the Klan, enacting good policies, winning with the biggest margin. o Republicans look very strong 1873 : Economic Panic Depression for the entire decade 1874 : Republicans lose house to Democrats 1876 (Run up to the 1876 Election): Political context for Cruikshank o Don’t isolate court cases—look at all of them together to get the overall picture Hayes certified as winner of 1876 Election—enacted the Conciliatory Policy o Hayes still supported voting rights This was a very costly election for Republicans because it gave Democrats the Senate o Looked like Democrats could actually win this election
