Lynnette K Bryant BUS 306 Quantitative Reasoning Case Case- Module 3 Systems of Linear Equations 29 August 2011 1. Determine whether the lines will be perpendicular when graphed. 3x - 2y = 6 2x + 3y = 6 Answer: slope of 1st equation: 3/2 slope of 2nd equation: -2/3 since their product is -1, the lines are perpendicular . 2. Alice's Restaurant has a total of 205 seats. The number of seats in the non-smoking section is 73 more than twice the number of seats in the smoking section. How many seats are in each section? Answer: x = smoking seats 2x + 73 = non-smoking seats x + 2x + 73 = 205 total seats 3x + 73 = 205 {combined like terms} 3x = 132 {subtracted 73 from both sides} x = 44 2x + 73 = 161 44 smoking seats 161 non-smoking seats

Unformatted text preview: x + 3y = 32-3x + 2y = 3 Answer: x+3y = 32-3x+2y = 3 Using Substitution Method First equation, y = 32/3 = 10.6666666666667 Second equation, -3x+2y = 3, or, -3x = 3-2y = -18.3333333333333 x = -18.3333333333333/ (-3) = 6.11111111111111. 4. Solve the system of equations x + y = 5 x - y = -9 Answer: Solve for x and y x+x+9=5 2x+9=5-9 -9 2x=-4 X= -2 5. Ricks Paint Store sells a special shade of pink paint (Ricky's Blush) which can be made from red paint and white paint. The amount of red paint should be three times the amount of white paint. How much of each kind of paint is needed to make 264 gallons of Ricky's Blush? Answer: x = amount (gals) of white paint 3x = amount (gals) of red paint x + 3x = 264 4x = 264 x = 264/4 x = 66 gals (white paint) Red paint: 3x = 3(66) = 198 gals...
