Children – A Special Audience Intro What is “Audience” - Can be socially derived - Can be studied structurally, behaviorally, and socio- culturally Why be concerned about children? TV affects children - Least = displacement - Most=beliefs-> emotions -> behaviors Little People, Big Changes There isn’t just one “children audience - Really 3 to 4 children audiences (toddlers, children, tweens teens) - Stage Theories - Cognitive Development o Jean Piaget - Moral Development o Lawrence Kohlberg Cognitive Development Piaget: 4 stages of mental maturity 1. Sensorimotor (B-2 yrs) – begins to interact with environment 2. Preoperational (2-7 yrs) – child begins to represent worlds symbolically 3. Concrete Operational (7-11 yrs) – child learns rules such as conservation 4. Formal Operational (11 yrs – Death) – adolescent thinks about future Sensorimotor - Learning language - Discovering physical world - Learn: o Objects exist outside themselves o Things exist even when they cant be seen o Some things cause other things to happen
