Technology will develop w/o demand Mediation – media’s role in providing knowledge to society - Mediation creates relationships with objects not directly known o Provide versions of events not directly experienced o Creates contact with actors, politicians, and others not otherwise accessible (books, movies, etc.) o Cultivation particular perceptions of people, places, and events - Media perform various roles expresses as metaphors like o Window on events o Mirror image of society o Filter for stories to be told o Guide to sense making Media DO NOT have monopoly on indirect experience Theories of media-society relations - Three types - Macro – theories – dealing with the media as part of the larger social setting
