Mai 1 Henry Mai Thursday English 3010 December 13, 2010 Project #4: Marketing Our Own As a community in lower East Michigan, we are subjected to shop at superstores such as Meijer’s and eat at restaurants such as Taco Bell. As an example, if we took the time to walk through the Aisles of Meijer’s, we can notice all the different choices and packages that companies try to catch our attention with. In the cereal aisle there is countless of types of cereal popping out trying to prove that they are more attractive than the other. Many of the cereals would come from the same companies like Post, Kellogg’s, and General Mills. Although each company may try to promote a healthy way of living by giving the idea of eating cereal in the morning will start off your day right. However, in actuality, we are subjected to a few categories. For example, most of the products on the cereal shelves consist of corn, soy, and rice. Taken in consideration of the limited amount of nutrients in corn, soy, and rice, cereal alone isn’t much of a breakfast. Although the message, “Having breakfast will start your day right” is true in many studies, but there are many different ways to have a breakfast. Marketing is a big factor of the reasons why we only notice limited amount of options for our meals. Over the years, marketing has grown as aggressive as technology continues to advances. The human nature to advance farther than each other has caused monopolies to grow. We cannot help but not notice that monopolies can take place on the acknowledgment of what to appear on our meals. Although this psychology phenomenon that grabs our attentions can be used for what to be placed on a breakfast menu, brings curiosity of how much effect does a company like Coca Cola and

Mai 2 McDonald have on America. Which gives the argument, are these companies monopolizing our attention to what we put in our mouths? The famous cola beverage company, Coca Cola, has been around for over a hundred years. According to Wikipedia on the history of Coca Cola, “In 1886, when Atlanta and Fulton County passed prohibition legislation, John Pemberton responded by developing Coca-Cola, essentially a non-alcoholic version of French Wine Coca.” Pemberton also had this product sold at pharmacy. In consideration of prohibition, the invention of Coca Cola was much demanded. Due to the fact that the original recipe of Coca Cola contained real Coca leaves which produces cocaine. Back then, America did not look at this as an illegal drug but a great alternative to relive headaches. Also mentioned in Wikipedia on the history of Coca Cola, “Pemberton claimed Coca-Cola cured many diseases, including morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache, and impotence. Pemberton ran the first advertisement for the beverage on May 29 of the same year in the Atlanta Journal.” Also in combination of an old belief that carbonated water can be good for your health, this created an image to the American’s of the late 19
