APPLYING RESEARCH SKILLS2Applying Research SkillsMedication errors are far too common, preventable events that happen in healthcare. These errors can happen in the making of medications to when the patient gets the medication and all situations in between. Healthcare professionals can decrease the incident of medication errors by using the five rights of medication administration. The five rights are: right drug, right patient, right dose, right time, and right route. Over the past 16 years of my nursing career, there have been significant advances with medication safety. When I think back to when I worked in the pediatric intensive care unit, I remember medication safety issues. At that time, routine medications were delivered to our unit and put into one medication cart for the whole entire unit. Your patient’s medication drawer could end up having the wrong medication in it. We did not have to scan the medication prior to giving it to insure it was correct. These two factors together were a bad combination that could have led to cases of adverse drug events. As challenging as it can be, it is very important to administer medication in a safe manner by using the five rights. Identifying Academic Peer-Reviewed Journal ArticlesI started my research by using Capella University’s search engine, Summon, to find my scholarly journal articles. I used keywords such as medication errors, medication administration, and medication safety. These keywords helped my search for information on thisvery important topic. After obtaining a list of articles, I narrowed the search to only include articles that were published within the last three years. Then, I refined the search to only include scholarly and peer-reviewed publications. This overall search provided me with the current and scholarly information that was relevant to my topic.
