Vocab Terms • Jahiliyya = “Age of Ignorance”- Pre-Islam era- Period of paganism prior to advent of Islam- Modernly used as Muslims who have strayed off the true path and are therefore unbelievers • Hanif = pious men practicing monotheism before Islam- Example: Abraham • Quraysh = Muhammad’s tribe- Controlled most of Mecca during Muhammad’s time- Controlled the Ka’ba - Originally angered by monotheistic revelations, and did not want to give up power over Ka’ba (economic power due to pilgrimages) • Qibla = direction of prayer- Originally was Jerusalem, changed to Ka’ba in Mecca • Ka’ba = cube-shaped shrine in center of the great mosque in Mecca- Site of pilgrimage and direction of prayer- Before Islam, was shrine for pagans- Controlled by tribe of Quraysh • Hijra = migration- Muhammad and his followers move from Mecca to Yathrib (Medina) in 622- Today means “calendar” migration to Medina is beginning of Muslim calendar- Lunar calendar- Introduced under Umar...
