FINAL EXAM April 2019 - Intro to SociologyNAME Robert Rich__________________________________1. Explain the concept of culture and how it is both useful and limiting.Culture is the ways of thinking, acting, and material objects that together form a group of people’s wayof life. Examples of this would be how middle eastern tribes choose to dress, the food they eat and how theypractice the Muslim faith. Culture has three different stages, the visible (art, dance, language), invisible(beliefs, language), and common humanity (how we love, laugh, cry, or the meaning of life). Culture isextremely important to our species, it is “the link to the past and a guide for the future”. This allows us to learnfrom prior mistakes, and help prevent them from happening again. Things like art and music allow messages tobe passed through generations, and help cultural views continue to thrive. There are two aspects of culture, the nonmarital culture is the ideas created by our society, like eating together at the dinner table. Whilemarital culture is the physical things created by members of that society like books, movies, and cars. Languageis a great example of culture, and yet is probably the most important aspect of culture. Language is the way weas a species communicates to one another. The systems of symbols, words, and different dialects all varythroughout the world. People are able to express things like values through language. They can communicatewhat is desirable, good, or even beautiful. An example of values would be how Americans value equalopportunity for all. Or how Americans believe in freedom, achievement and success for all. We are able topractice religions thanks to our languages and culture. We do this with beliefs, or ideas of what peopleconsider true or false. We communicate sermons, prayers, and other ceremony’s all based on beliefs. Culturecan also become very overpowering in certain situations. Examples would be culture shock, eurocentrism, andafrocentrism. Culture shock is the disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life. Ways toexperience culture shock would be joining the military, studying abroad, or moving to a new location.
