STA 6126 – HW 1 – Due 9/14/11 1) Download the file U.S. SMSA Retail Sales (1992) . It’s variables are: County Name Per Capita Retail Sales (in $1000s) Per Capita Retail Establishments Per Capita Income ($1000s) Per Capita Federal Expenditures ($1000s) Males per 100 females 2) Import the data into SPSS Click on File Open Then select directory with data then Filetype: EXCEL 3) Obtain summary statistics: mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum for per capita retail sales among this population of counties, as well as a histogram. Instructions: a) Click on Analyze Descriptive Statistics Frequencies (Click “off” Display Frequency Tables) b) Select the variable to analyze, then click Options . c) Select Mean, Median, Std. Deviation, Minimum, Maximum d) The summary statistics will be printed in an output window. e) Click on Graphs Legacy Dialogues Histogram f) Select the variable to graph, then click OK . The histogram will appear in the output window.
