STA 6126 – Project 2 Fall 2010 Due 10/11/2010 Inference Concerning a Population Proportion The dataset ebert.xls contains 500 simulated samples of n = 100 movies from the population of all movies he had reviewed prior to March 2006. We are interested in estimating the proportion of all movies he reviewed over this period that he gave ratings of 3* or above. This proportion is our target parameter π that we would make inference on. Each row represents a random sample of n =100 movies. A “1” means the movie did receive a rating of 3* or above, a “0” means it received a rating of 2.5* or below. Complete the following parts of this analysis: 95% Confidence Intervals for π Import the dataset into SPSS (the variable names are given in the first row) Create a new variable that is the number of movies in each sample that do receive a rating of 3* or above: o Click on Transform Compute o Then for Target Variable enter X o Then for Numeric Expression enter SUM(movie01 to movie100) o Click OK Use X to obtain the sample proportion: X/n : o Click on Transform Compute o Then for Target Variable enter PI_HAT o Then for Numeric Expression
