History The canning industry dates back to the early 1900’s But beginning in the ‘60’s, significant industry canning problems Incidences of a botulism poisoning due to commercial canning 1963 - inadequate supervision of a commercial canning operation led to one botulism incident 1971 – an incident was traced to failure to apply a proper heat process to commercially canned product 1978 – ascertained to be an individual container damage 1982 – extremely occasional and random malfunction of the bottom double seam of the food container

The 1971 incident led to the industry to request heat processing regulations to ensure proper processing of commercially canned food. Better Process Control School - FDA -- National Canners Association (NCA) now National Food Processors Association (NFPA) Places the responsibility for production of safe food products on individual industry employees.
