Progress – 1/31/08 The focus of this week was to demonstrate a very basic implementation of the background oriented schlieren (BOS) technique. We wanted to ensure that density gradients could be visualized against a background with a relatively simple setup, most importantly one that does not require additional computer processing before an image could be seen. To this end, we created several simple backgrounds consisting of sets of horizontal and/or vertical lines of varying thickness and number using Matlab’s graphing tools. We hoped to use the shop air nozzle at ASL or the flame from a simple cigarette lighter to produce a medium with density gradients that could be seen against one or more of these backgrounds. The shop air nozzle produced no visible distortion of the background image due to density differences, but one issue we encountered with this apparatus was that the high speed air tended to move the background
