Progress – 2/7/08 The images of the initial example setup shown in the Jan. 31 st progress report showed that the background-oriented schlieren effect was detectable, but they left much to be desired in terms of image quality. After much review of basic photography and careful thought about BOS system, we arrived at the following requirements and their effect on the overall system. BOS System Requirements Effect on BOS Setup and Camera/Lens Choice Primary Reqs To qualitatively “see” the schlieren image (w/o computer processing), must increase BOS sensitivity Increase distance “a” between density gradient and background image Must focus on density gradient yet reduce background image blur as much as possible Need good depth of field Secondary Reqs Maximize background/density gradient in camera field of view Due to large distance a, narrow viewing angle is best (usually
