10/10/2011 proteins 1. fibrous- simple, regular linear structure and often found to play structural role in the cell and extracellular matrix 2. globular 3. membrane collagen- most abundant in mammals. extracellular protein found in skin, bones, etc. Sequence demonstrates some unique features of collagen 1. 1/3 of amino acids are glycine residues 2. sequence of glycine- proline- hydroxyproline recurs frequently. - hydroxyproline -- proline modfied by adding hydroxyl group in place of one of the H atomson the pyrrolidine ring. Coiled-coil proteins- under fibrous proteins. structural protein. includes keratin. - 2 helices coiled together. the coiling of these 2 helices can alter the right handed aplha helices so that there are only 3.5 residues per turn. Heptad repeat- contain imperfect repeats of a sequence of 7 amino acids. Globular proteins- most numerous - many mediate cell function. Myoglobin- first protein to be seen in atomic detail via xray diffraction. has molecular weight of 16, 700 and contains 153 amino acids.
