Wright Mills The sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals. It is the idea that the individual can understand his own experience and gauge his own fate only by locating himself within his period, that he can know his own chances in life only by becoming aware of those of all individuals in his circumstances. This applies to what we are learning because we apply this to everything we are learning and hopefully ourselves. Social system Made up of individuals, groups, organizations Has norms, roles, institutions Goals or incentives can change depending on what social system is in place We learn about the social system of Detroit Restrictive covenant neighborhood improvement association. They would legally restrict who one could sell their homes to. They created a point system to whether or not they can buy a home there, ex. Their education, skin tone, etc. Created ghettos for blacks and greater segregation and caused greater disadvantages for all blacks regardless of income, ex. Ossian Sweet Institutional racism Lynching
