Candace Seu Ch6a Section 6 10/12/2007 Remembering Overall Periodic Table Trends (important!) The hard-core scientific way Principles 1. Protons (nucleus) and electrons are charged particles, so they attract. 2. More protons (higher charge, i.e. higher Z) means electrons are held in the atom more strongly. 3. However, core electrons “shield” valence electrons from the attractive force of the nucleus. 4. Therefore, the charge experience by valence electrons tends to be less than what might be expected, especially in heavier atoms with more core shells. (Zeff < Z) Therefore Down a GROUP: Z increases. No of e- increases in higher level shells. These electrons are highly shielded. They are held more weakly. Across a PERIOD: Z increases. No. of e- increases in the same shell. Electrons in the same shell and do not shield each other. The nucleus can attract the e- quite well. Trends Atomic radii (Van Der Waals radii) – If the electrons are held strongly, they will be pulled in
