1 Chemistry is around us all the time. What is Chemistry? - Study of matter ( composition and properties ) and change it undergoes (usually involves energy exchange). The word “chemical” is usually associated with danger - “pollution, hazard, explosion, …” Atomic bomb – Hiroshima/Nagasaki – Japan Love Canal – NY – 1980 toxic materials buried underground Bhopal – India - Dec. 1984 (methyl isocyanate) Exxon -Valdez oil spill – Mar. 24, 1989 BP -– off shore drilling mess - April 2010 Checking air quality at Application of basic chemistry : - New materials, electronics; computers, smart phones, transportation devices… - Medicine – medicinal drugs, instruments for diagnosis – MRI, ct scan . . - Energy sources – fuel - solar, geo-thermal, chemical (gasoline, fuel cells…) - Food supplies – sterilized, frozen … f f tili ti id Checking air quality at hazardous waste site The application of the principles of chemistry is what determines improvement or destruction of life!!! benefits/risk ratio assessment - of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
