OUTLINE 2 Outline I. In the United States, social security has played a big role in planning for retirement, but it will not be around much longer, so it is important plan your retirement needs as if it never existed. A. The intent of social security was never to cover all your retirement needs, but to aid in the expenses when you retire. B. Social security benefits account for over two thirds of a retiree’s income. II. In the beginning social security had 16 people paying in to the trust for one person it had to pay benefits, but now that number has decreased to 3.3 payees to each retiree and the number continues to decrease. A. There is an increasing amount of people retiring due to the baby boomer generation. B. Life expectancy is also rising so people are claiming benefits for a longer amount of time. C.
