Use the form given at the bottom of page 258, rather than the form with the analytical derivative on the previous page. Also plot log( error ) versus log( n ) for each, and comment on the slopes. Epperson, Section 5.3 problems: 3, 7 for case 6a. (You are not required to do/hand-in 6a.) Epperson, Section 5.4 problem: 1. Find a root of f ( x ) = xe x - ( x 2 + 1) using both the methods given in (3.44) and (3.45) of Epperson, starting from x 0 = 1. Also use Newton’s method. Plot the log of the error at step n + 1 versus the log of the error at step n , where n is the iteration number. (Note that you can use the final iteration as the true solution.)
