SHES 2200 Ecology Definition: Studies of interrelationships between __________________ and their environment. Ecology = oikos (house) + logos (discourse). Ecological terms Ecology The study of relationships between living organisms and between them and their environment Ecosystem A (self-sustained) community and its abiotic (non-living) environment Population A group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time and capable of interbreeding Community A group of populations living and interacting with each other in a habitat Species A group of organisms that could interbreed and produce fertile offspring Habitat The environment in which a species normally lives or the location of a living organism. Niche The organism’s ‘job’ within that address. Habitat is the ‘address’or location. The role of each species within an ecosystem. Biosphere Relatively thin life-supporting stratum of the Earth's surface, extending from a few kilometres into the atmosphere to the deep-sea vents of the ocean. The biosphere is a global ecosystem composed of living organisms (biota) and the abiotic (nonliving) factors from which they derive energy and nutrients. Food chain An arrangement of the organisms of an ecological community according to the order of predation in which each uses the next usual lower member as a food source e.g. grass (producer) -mouse (primary consumer) -snake (secondary consumer) -hawk (tertiary consumer). Food web The totality of interacting food chains in an ecological community Trophic level The position that an organism occupies in a food chain or a group of organisms in a community that occupy the
