Introduction Communication is the backbone of success in the hospitality industry. It is impossible to imagine a successful hospitality company providing exceptional service that does not demonstrate stellar communication. Effective communication is also the key to fostering strong relationships in the work place. When you have good communication amongst employees, great service comes a lot easier because the happier your employees are, the happier your guests will be. Strong communication means keeping everyone involved with everything that’s going on in an organization, and not withholding any information without proper cause. Although communication is an extremely dynamic subject, we’ve observed that the one constant in good communication is strong leadership. Strong leadership is the best way to ensure strong communication in a company. There are a countless number of different theories and methods on how to effectively communicate as a leader in an organization. As a group, we decided it would be most effective to research how different companies in the industry create a culture of effective communication. In addition to our research, we conducted five interviews with leaders in the industry who clearly have utilized effective communication to take them to where they are today. These interviewees held positions in the hotel industry that include General Manager, Vice President, and Senior Vice President. These interviews offered a wide range of perspectives and detailed different paths these individuals took in becoming leaders in their company, yet they all stressed the importance of good communication. Based off both our research and our personal interview, we’ve established that strong communication is crucial to becoming a successful leader. 2

Our research, interviews, and comparisons In this section, we will provide summaries of our research and our interviews on how communication affects leadership abilities as well as a comparison of our findings. We will address the following questions: What sorts of communication strategies have you implemented or used to become an effective leader? How do effective leaders share information? What communication techniques have helped you get to where you are at today? How do you successfully communicate your vision? In your experience, how do other leaders communicate effectively? How do effective leaders listen to others when they are sharing information? How do effective leaders communicate success and failure to their employees? How do successful leaders motivate fellow employees to communicate? How do successful leaders communicate with people outside their company? (e.g. suppliers, guests) How can successful leaders overcome cultural/language barriers when communicating?
