VITAMINS Vitamins are organic compounds required in small amounts for the normal function of the body. They are traditionally divided into two groups: FAT SOLUBLE = A, D, E, K WATER SOLUBLE = C, B GROUP VITAMIN A: Required to maintain cellular structures. Deficiencies = impaired reproduction, fragile bones, continuous tearing, night blindness, loss of appetite, reduced resistance to infection, elevated spinal fluid pressure, rough hair coat, and scaly hooves. SOURCES- Plants contain the yellow pigment CAROTENE, which mammals can covert to Vit A. Carotene is easily oxidized/destroyed. As much as 80% of carotene is lost during harvesting of hay, and hay stored > 6 months loses and additional 50%. Good, GREEN pasture is an excellent source of carotene. Properly harvested alfalfa is a decent source. Grass hays don’t contain much. CORN is also a good source of carotene, but other grains contain very little. ***ALMOST ALL COMMERCIAL HORSE FEEDS HAVE ADDED VIT A.
