WATER Water is classified as THE MOST IMPORTANT NUTRIENT. Removing water from the diet results in death within as little as 3-5 days. The 1100# horse is composed of ~ 70% water. ~ 90 gallons ~ 45 gallons (50%) contained in GIT Providing water is relatively easy. As long as the horse has access to clean, good quality, palatable water, he/she will consume adequate amounts to meet or exceed the requirements. Excessive consumption of water is generally NOT a problem. WATER REQUIREMENTS: At maintenance (cool environment, no exercise, etc.) = 0.5 gallons/100#BW/day 100# horse needs ~ 5 gallons of water per day. Water requirement is influenced the amount of water LOST or USED by the body. FACTORS include: 1. FEED > Amount Increasing volume increase water consumption > Type Increasing fiber content increased water consumption Higher hay higher water requirement More liquid needed to move through GIT more liquid LOST through feces increased moisture content of feces AND increased output of feces. Moisture content Increased moisture content of feed decreased water intake required. o
