Swine Ear Notching Purpose : The lesson is designed to teach students how to read, interpret and evaluate the swine ear notching system. Objectives: Upon completion of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Label ear notches with their corresponding numbers. 2. Create and Illustrate a pig notching diagram 3. Produce a litter of illustrated pigs with different pig numbers 4. Evaluate swine ear notching on live and illustrated pigs based upon notch placement. TEKS/TAKS : 1. TEKS: 119.13-4D 2. TAKS Alignment: English: 1(7); Algebra & Geometry: 1A(b)1(C), (D), & (E); 9(8.11)(A) Biology: 1(2)(C) Focus/Interest Approach : Have a pen of white pigs or a picture of white pigs and have students try to pick out an individual from the group based upon a certain characteristic. Narrative: See these pigs class, based on breed how are you going to be able to decide which pig is yours among a sea of white pigs? In the swine industry, to identify one pig from another, we use a standardized system call Ear Notching. Lesson Content
