Group- assembly of people who communicate in order to fulfill a common purpose and achieve a goal Small group – 3-12 people Large group – 12 or more Advantages to working in groups: 1. Get input from many different types of people 2. Can challenge an idea before it’s put to action 3. Result in a more thought out decision 4. Have a higher level of commitment to that decision Risky Shift Phenomenon – states that many decisions made by groups receive more thought, more experimentation or less conservative and contain more risk Disadvantages to working in groups: 1. Groups take longer 2. Give up some individuality when working in a group 3. Suffer from group think (agree for the sake of agreeing) 4. Greater desire for group harmony instead of the best decision Pollyanna Nietzsche Effect – where you think your group is perfect and can do no wrong Social Loafers- person does very little because they know someone else will do it Group Operation Task (model) 1- Group Norming
