CMST 1061 Oct. 18 Lecture Rhetoric – the message you have planned with some audience in mind Types of Audience: -seen -unseen (imagined audience) Target Audience – specific audience the rhetor wishes to address Actual Audience – of those members who actually receive the message Universal Audience – Ultimate audience – imagined audience of highly rational individuals, audience of all normal adult persons Elite Audience – audience of all trained specialists in a discipline (ex. Doctor’s Convention) Rhetorical Audience – audience consisting of only those persons who are capable of being influenced by the message of the speech and are capable of acting in a manner relevant to improving the problem or exigence (ex. Trying to get someone to vote for you, find a relative class to come speak in) Audience Analysis: 1. Demographics (characteristics based on descriptions and background) a. Age, sex, occupation, religion, education, race, ethnicity, group affiliation, social status, income
