CMST 1061 October 30 Lecture Language – system of human communication based on speech sounds used as arbitrary symbols Study of language – involves the study based on meaning, meanings based on words, the way words are put together, and the backgrounds and experiences of the communicators Words = symbols Symbols: 1- symbols define a. totalizing language – use a single label to represent the totality of a person 2- symbols evaluate a. loaded language – language that slants perception (ex.
