CMST 1061 Sept. 13 Lecture Symbolic interaction - how the self is formed through interaction with others Feedback we receive- reflective appraisals (importance is based on whether this person is important to you or not) As you interact, the self that is left after every interaction is known as your Residual Self. Self-Talk is the inner voice or conversations that you have with yourself. Can be either positive or negative 1. Become aware of your self-talk 2. Visualization 3. Perception- the factors that combine to allow each individual to view the world as determined by culture, communication skill, physical and emotional state, experiences, attitudes, memories and expectations. 4. Cognitive processing- how we comprehend, organize, and store ideas Schema- structure that helps us process and organize information Prototypes-Types of schemas- objects, people, events, relationships Personal construct- yardstick that regards how we define things in greater detail (ex. Different people see being tall differently)
