Blue boxes refer to the federal system, which applies federal law in almost all circumstances. State laws are only applied in a case that has been removed from the state court system for trial in the federal court system. Green boxes refer to the state system, which applies state law. A state case can only be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court if the case involves a U.S.
