D ifferent responses to new information • When beliefs, behaviors, or ideas conflict with each other, this generates tension called “cognitive dissonance.” – “When dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase the dissonance.” (Leon Festinger, Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957), p. 3) • By trying to change some beliefs, behaviors, or ideas • By trying to find new beliefs, behaviors, or ideas • By trying to avoid some situations or information – When beliefs are strong, supported by a group, or habitual, the easier and normal response is to increase the strength of adherence to the ingrained beliefs. – Not always the best response • It is difficult to change one’s ideas or behavior. 1b. What was the 1c.
