Dunn English 101: Visual Texts Analysis October 9 2009 The use of visual texts is one of the most common ways for a message or idea to be conveyed to an audience. In a visual text, an artist may use images, and sometimes words, to express a deeper meaning than cannot be grasped by simply glancing at a picture. When analyzing a visual text it is important to focus on how various design elements are combined to communicate an overall theme or idea. In particular, Annie Leibovitz is an incredible visual texts designer who has photographed many famous people, including the White Stripes band, which is a husband and wife duet. In the photo “White Stripes”, Annie Leibovitz expresses the idea of trust, love, and evil between a man and a woman in a relationship through the setting, the colors, and the characters. The imperfect setting of the picture symbolizes how relationships are often flawed. Overall, the area in which the photograph was taken appears to be unkempt and dirty. There are wooden beams scattered across the dirt ground, which is entangled in overgrown weeds and grass. Furthermore, the setting shows how a man and a woman are able to find happiness and beauty in the most ugly situations. By choosing a setting that seems to be the complete opposite of beautiful while still being able to capture the striking emotions of love and trust between a man and a woman in a relationship, Annie Leibovitz communicates the idea that beauty can sometimes be masked or hidden. In a setting that is not appealing to the eye, beauty is not always as easy to find as the bull’s-eye of the target in the picture. Leibovitz uses a target to focus the
