Depuis indicates a period of time up to the moment referred to (present or past). 1. The time of the narration is in the PRESENT ; the expressed action started in the past but is continuing in the present. Depuis corresponds in this case to the English “for”. Ex : J’habite dans cette maison depuis quatre ans. [I have been living in this house for four years (and I still am)] a. Note that in English a past tense is used (“present perfect”), while the présent is used in French. b. Synonym expressions: il y a … que, cela fait … que (ça à l’oral ), voilà … que : Ex : Il y a quatre ans que j’habite dans cette maison. Cela fait quatre ans que j’habite dans cette maison. Voilà quatre ans que j’habite dans cette maison. 2. The time of the narration is in the PAST ; the action started in the past and was still going on at the time of the narration (the past). Here depuis (“ for”) expresses how long something had been going on ( imparfait ) when something else happened ( passé composé ). Ex: J’habitais dans cette maison depuis quatre ans quand la guerre a commencé. (I had been living in this house for four years when the war started) a. “J’habitais” is in the imparfait which conveys the ongoing nature of an action in the past, as opposed to a punctual action in the past expressed in French by the passé composé (“a commencé”). 3.
