Soils, Minerals, & Geomorphology ! RS can play a limited role in identification, inventory, and mapping of land surface soils covered with dense vegetation ! RS can provide information about the chemical composition – mineralogy of rocks & soils that are on the Earth’s surface (not completely covered by dense vegetation) ! RS can also be used to extract geologic information about lithology, structure, drainage patterns, & geomorphology

Soil Characteristics ! What is soil? " Unconsolidated material at surface of the Earth that serves as a natural medium for growing plants " The weathered material at the Earth’s surface between the atmosphere & the bedrock below the surface (to a maximum depth of approximately 200 cm) " A mixture of inorganic mineral particles & organic matter of varying size & composition. " The (organic & inorganic) particles make up to 50% of the soil’s volume. Pores containing air and/or water occupy the remaining volume.

Soil Horizons ! Biological, chemical, & physical processes create vertical zonation within the upper 200cm of soil in which there is free movement of gravity water & groundwater capillary moisture. This results in soil horizons . ! Horizons situated above the bedrock in a typical soil profile can be distinguished from one another based on their color , texture , & chemical properties .

Soil Grain Size & Texture ! Grain size is one of the main variables to identify soil taxonomy. ! Soil grain size classes include: sand, silt, & clay ! Grain size determines the percolation or retention of water by soil particles, thereby indirectly affecting the reflectance properties of soils.
