I. Region Analysis – European Union 1. Regional alliances and economic integration 1.a. The European Union is comprised of 27 countries representing 500 million people. 1.b. Signed in 1957, the Treaty of Rome created the European Community. The name changed to European Union in 1994. Other significant treaties affecting alliances and integration are The European Single Act in 1987, Treaty of European Union, Maastricht in 1993, Treaty of Nice in 2003, and Treaty of Lisbon in 2009. 1.c. The European Commission promotes the common interest. The commission is in Brussels Belgium and employs more than 24,000 people. 1.d. The Council on the European Union, also called the Council of Ministers has ultimate control of approving legislation and acts on behalf of each member state. 1.e. The European Parliament is the voice of the people and is comprised of 732 elected members from each member state. The larger the state, the more parliament seats it holds. 1.f.
