Heredity (BIOL 303) Patterns of Inheritance Problem Set I 1. You have four mice: A, B, C, and D. Mice A, B, and C are agouti and mouse D is black. The following crosses were made and progeny phenotypes observed: A x B --> all agouti A x C --> 3/4 agouti and 1/4 black B x D --> all agouti a) which phenotype is dominant? b) list the genotypes of all four mice. c) predict the progeny phenotypes and proportions of a cross between mouse C and D. 2. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare autosomal recessive disease. A couple wants to have children but consults a genetic counselor because the man has a sister with PKU and the woman has a brother with PKU. There are no other known cases in their families. They ask the genetic counselor to determine the probability that their first child will have PKU. What is this probability? 3. A cross is made: A/A x a/a a) What will be the genotype and phenotype of the F1 generation? Give proportions. b) If an F1 individual is crossed to the recessive parent, what will be the genotypes and phenotypes of the progeny? Give proportions. What is the name of this type of cross? c) If an individual is crossed to the dominant parent, what will be the genotypes and phenotypes of the progeny? Give proportions. 4. In nasturtium flowers, orange and red petals are determined by alleles of one gene. A pure- breeding red flower is crossed to a pure-breeding orange flower, and the progeny are all orange. a) Explain this result in terms of allelic interaction and parental genotypes, using allelic symbols of your choice. Be sure to define the symbols. b)
