Chapter 20 Mountain Building and the Evolution of the Continents Orogenesis (aka orogeny) – mountain building. Mountains built for a number of reasons including Continental collision Subduction that leads to volcanic activity Volcanic activity at mid-ocean ridges Accretion Emplacement of granite batholiths – mountains occur much later Faulting and folding Accretion – sticking material onto the edge of a continent. Usually occurs due to continental collision or as a byproduct of subduction. Believed to be one way continents assembled. Millions to billions of years ago continental crust was in small pieces, not the 7 large continents we see today. Terrane – any foreign piece of crust accreted to the edge of a continent. Accretionary wedge – sediment accreted to the continent when subduction occurs. Sediment was originally deposited between the continent and the trench offshore. It was “scraped” off the top of the subducting oceanic plate and stuck to the continent’s edge. Often creates mountains like the Coast Ranges in California and Oregon.
