Adam Bottorff 3/24/10 Sociology Loder Gender as Structured In Barbara Risman's "Gender as Structure" she argues that to analyze the effects of gender it is necessary to understand its effects at three levels. These levels are the individual level, interactional level, and institutional level. Barbara is trying to find out where gender comes from, and how is one person defined by a gender. By doing this she looks at four phases in which she believes shapes gender, and how people act the way they do in society. The first tradition focuses on how individual sex differences originate. We are all born either a male or female but gender is not something we are born into. It is something we become by our actions and ways. Barbara found out that from the reinforcement theory, by Bandura and Walters in 1963, which girls are act the way they do from when they are young and are given much attention and praise. Barbara also found out that at a young age, boys develop their traits from competitions and sports. Women are taught to be the ones who take care of the house and
