Abnormal Psychology Definition of Abnormal Psychology A scientific study of abnormal behavior is called “Abnormal Psychology”. The scientific study of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders is known as psychopathology. The psychopathology is not a defect within a person but product of complex interaction between characteristics of individual and social environment. Defining or identifying abnormal behavior is also tricky. Criteria or Objective Standards for defining and diagnosing abnormality 1. Statistical Deviance: Does the person’s behavior fall outside the normal range of behavior? Age, Sex and Status

2. Personal Distress: Does the behavior cause personal anguish or discomfort? 3. Maladaptiveness: Does the person’s behavior interfere with personal and social adaptation or pose a danger to self or others. Line or differentiation between normal and abnormal may be blurred DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria : (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-version IV ) is especially useful for research purpose. It is used by professional clinical psychologists. The psychiatrists rely on ICD -10 (International Classification of Disorders version 10) for the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
