SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING Biomechanics or kinesiology Kinesiology is the study of human motion It should not be confused with applied kinesiology, which is a  pseudo-science of alternative medicine Kinesiology is more general – studying all types of motion (not  just the mechanical workings)

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING Type 1 (1 st  class) lever Load Force Fulcrum E.g. pulling down on a rope  attached to a pulley In that example, the tricep  muscle (back of the upper  arm) would be used Fulcrum between force and  load

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING Levers as models • What we just went through are  models  of how legs,  arms, etc. work  • They are simplified representations, but still correspond  well to how work is done by the human body • We will cover other models (with more detail) later on.
