Women didn’t have any prinomen●Second name = nomen/ gentilicium. The family name●Third name and any other name = cognomen. Helps to distinguish different branches of big families. Some of them start off as nicknames. If you get more cognomen those are the agnomen = sometimes they define the family but usually just a nickname.-Addressing others: ●Family situation = prinomen is used●More formal they use the gentilicium and the cognomen●Filiation= you will also be addressed with your father’s name or maybe even your grandfather. In really formal situations. They also list their tribes (voting districts) this idea of identity is attached withthe democratic ideas of Rome. -Women names: ●They took the feminine form of the nomen of their father. If you have 2 daughters you can call one of them the elder and the other a minor. If you have multiple you give them numbers. ●Women’s official name: also has filiation. If she gets married her names turns into the wife of somebody. -Slave names: ●They only have one name. Once they are freed they take on the prinomen and the nomen of the personwho freed them (usually their master). This also happens when ppl gain citizenship. Ex: when Julius Caesar conquers a city all the citizens get the name Gaius Julius.●Freed slaves become “the freed man of…” for their official name-Structure of Roman Civ:●Romans divided society in 3: Servi (slaves), liberti (freedmen), Ingenui (free born)●Different aspects that determine your place in society: citizenship (only adult males could be citizens),freedom (servi, liberti, ingenui), wealth●Roman and Greeks considered themselves more cultured/ civilised anyone else is a barbarian (foreigner).●Citizens in the Rome divided into 2 classes: Patricians = the aristocrats 1% of ppl, everyone else Plebeians (Plebs). The Patrician class is passed down thru family: you got patrician names and plebeian names.
