CLA1102 ARoman CivilizationDAILY LIFE NOTESJanuary 22, 2019 – January 29th, 2019 – MISSED NOTES-Names: Trianomina = 3 names. First name = prinomen: for men there are only a limited amount of first names. Women didn’t have any prinomenSecond name = nomen/ gentilicium. The family nameThird name and any other name = cognomen. Helps to distinguish different branches of big families. Some of them start off as nicknames. If you get more cognomen those are the agnomen = sometimes they define the family but usually just a nickname.-Addressing others: Family situation = prinomen is usedMore formal they use the gentilicium and the cognomenFiliation= you will also be addressed with your father’s name or maybe even your grandfather. In really formal situations. They also list their tribes (voting districts) this idea of identity is attached withthe democratic ideas of Rome. -Women names: They took the feminine form of the nomen of their father. If you have 2 daughters you can call one of them the elder and the other a minor. If you have multiple you give them numbers. Women’s official name: also has filiation. If she gets married her names turns into the wife of somebody. -Slave names: They only have one name. Once they are freed they take on the prinomen and the nomen of the personwho freed them (usually their master). This also happens when ppl gain citizenship. Ex: when Julius Caesar conquers a city all the citizens get the name Gaius Julius.Freed slaves become “the freed man of…” for their official name-Structure of Roman Civ:Romans divided society in 3: Servi (slaves), liberti (freedmen), Ingenui (free born)Different aspects that determine your place in society: citizenship (only adult males could be citizens),freedom (servi, liberti, ingenui), wealthRoman and Greeks considered themselves more cultured/ civilised anyone else is a barbarian (foreigner).Citizens in the Rome divided into 2 classes: Patricians = the aristocrats 1% of ppl, everyone else Plebeians (Plebs). The Patrician class is passed down thru family: you got patrician names and plebeian names.
The Patrician family had all the wealth, power, and influence. Afterwards, plebeians obtained wealth...etc. Some patricians become poor. Later on ppl don't care for the different classes => social class depends then more on political pwr/ military pwr.New middle-class grosesup emerges from Roman society that derives their wealth from business rather than land: Equites (Eques), ppl who can serve in the calvary cuz they rich enough to have a horse. These guys not allowed to be in politics cuz only ppl with land can do so. Equestrian Order = club of Equites. In order to be a member you need property of 400 0000 sesterces (roman coin). Senatorial order = the first office you need to hold to join is a quaestor (a minor financial office), and a property of 800 0000 sesterces. These guys involved in politics.
