Heather Orlosky Assignment 31.How did each of the following contribute to the creation of imperialism during the 19thcentury: Opium Wars? Leopold II? Congress of Berlin (1884)?The conflict between China and Britain contributed to the creation and spread of imperialism through the Opium Wars. The rising tension was caused by the drug trade when the Chinese emperor banned opium imports in hopes to rid China of the highly addictive drug. Europeans disagreed with the ban and stated that they could trade with whomever they wanted. This ledto several wars in which Britain secured new trading privileges, ports, and other economic opportunities in China for Britain. Chinese rebels challenged the emperor’s authority that led to major conflict within the heart of China. This disastrous conflict led to European countries being able to directly control trade in China. Before the 1870s, the inland of Africa had been untouched by Europeans. However, King Leopold II financed European colonizers such as Henry Stanley to uncover new untouched territory. A new commercial company was created called the International Association for the Exploration and Civilization of the Congo. This led to the start of treaties with local elites and opened up the Congo River to commercialization of new resources. The Congress of Berlin in 1884 was assembled to settle who would control the Congo River basin. The conference set new rules for imperial expansion. Britain, France, and Germany joined forces and the Congo was open to free trade and commerce. However, the Congo Free State was still under control of Leopold II and was able to be exploited by many European corporations. African land and its people were still being exploited through poor work conditions, and the extraction of valuable resources such as rubber, palm oil, diamonds, and cocoa.
