Unformatted text preview: 031:010 - Research Methods in Psychology – Spring, 2010 – April 1 st Four Validities ( what? again! ) SCV : the extent to which the inferences made about the sampling population ( using a sample ) are accurate IntVal : the extent to which a significant IV-DV relationship is causal and not spurious ConVal : the extent to which the operational definitions of the independent and dependent variables are accurate which means : the extent to which the measure provides an accurate estimate of ( all and only ) the target theoretical construct and/or the extent to which the manipulation alters ( all and only ) the target theoretical construct ExtVal : the extent to which the findings will generalize to other situations Major Threats to Internal Validity Confounds! ≈ lack of control ≈ all else was not equal Internal Validity - the extent to which a significant IV-DV relationship is causal and not spurious note: the failure to find a significant relationship could be caused by a confound that works against the IV Outline Recall: the specific confounds to worry about depend on the type of experimental design Therefore: the key design issues to focus on depend on the type of experimental design Between-subjects: random assignment Within-subjects: counter-balancing Choosing the Design Type factors favoring between-subjects- interest in a subject variable ( e.g., trait anxiety ) ( technically, this makes it a quasi-experiment )- need for a “vanilla” control condition...
